Like her protagonist, Bigelow is both a meticulous technician and a ballsy showoff. And, like him, she has ice water in her veins.. The Hurt Locker leaves an impression. It practically leaves a bruise.. The movie flirts with a great darkness about disillusionment and self-loathing even as it races around spinning comedic plates. Too bad the filmmakers lose their nerve by film's end.. Just when you thought Matthew McConaughey had settled into pre-retirement content to play the (dry-aged) beefcake...
